Sukhothai Thani(Thai:สุโขทัยธานี,pronounced[sù.kʰǒː.tʰājtʰāː.nīː]) is a small town about 427 km (265 mi) north ofBangkokon theRiver Yom,a tributary of theChao Phraya River.The population is 37,000. The town is 12 km (7.5 mi) east of the historic city ofSukhothai.This city was the capital of the first Thai kingdom, usually called theSukhothai Kingdom,hence the modern city is often calledNew Sukhothai.Sukhothai Thani is the capital ofSukhothai province.
