Syzran(Russian:Сызрань,IPA:[ˈsɨzrənʲ]) is the third largest[3]cityinSamara Oblast,Russia,located on the right bank ofSaratov Reservoirof theVolga River.Population:165,725 (2021 Census);[7]178,750 (2010 Russian census);[3]188,107 (2002 Census);[8]174,335 (1989 Soviet census).[9]
History
[edit]Founded in 1683 as afortress,Syzran grew into an important trading center and was granted town status in 1796.[citation needed]One tower from the 17th-century fortress still stands. It is also the site ofSyzran Bridge,once the longest bridge in Europe.
Administrative and municipal status
[edit]Within theframework of administrative divisions,Syzran serves as theadministrative centerofSyzransky District,[1]even though it is not a part of it.[10]As an administrative division, it is, together with threerural localities,incorporated separately as thecity of oblast significanceof Syzran—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of thedistricts.[2]As amunicipal division,the city of oblast significance of Syzran is incorporated asSyzran Urban Okrug.[4]
Economy
[edit]The city's main employers are a large oil refinery owned byRosneft,OAOTyazhmashheavy industry machinery metallurgy mechanical turbines related to electricity production (and working with CzechBlanskofirmCKD Blanskoon some works, like in South America), and the Syzran power station.
