TEKE::TEKEis a Canadianpsychedelic rockband, whose music blendsJapanese rockandsurf rockinfluences.[1]They are most noted for their albumShirushi,which was a longlisted nominee for the2021 Polaris Music Prize.[2]
The band was formed by guitarist Serge Nakauchi Pelletier, trombonist Étienne Lebel and drummer Ian Lettre, originally as aTakeshi Terauchitribute band, after they discovered Terauchi's music while on tour with rapperBoogat.[3]They added guitarist Hidetaka Yoneyama, bassist Mishka Stein and flautist Yuki Isami and made their live debut in a 2017 show at the Distorsion Festival inMontreal;[3]by the time of the band's second show at thePop Montrealfestival, they had added vocalist Maya Kuroki and evolved from a straight Terauchi cover band to performing original material inspired by Japanese eleki music.[3]
Their debut EPJikakuwas released in 2018,[1]andShirushi,their full-length debut album, was released in May 2021 onKill Rock Stars.[4]
They followed up in 2023 withHagata,which was longlisted for the2024 Polaris Music Prize.[5]
