Dog Article Importance

Based on the inclusion of the two other large pack-forming members of the canina subtribe in the high-importance class of the dog category, their outsized importance in the understanding of overall canid taxonomy, their endangered status, and their conspicuously complex social nature, I've moved this species into the high-importance class for WikiProject Dogs. --Isnotafox(talk)20:53, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tien Shan dholeextinct?

I think it is likely theTien Shan dholeis already extinct. The countries it is listed as occuring in (Russia, a few -stan countries) have had their dhole populations eradicated according to IUCN and I have been unable to find photos from recently of the subspecies. The cited sources are a bit old for the purpose, and the IUCN is silent on the status of this particular putative subspecies. I can't see any recent articles on it either. I don't think we can say anything specific here ATM. --Elmidae(talk·contribs)21:29, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dhole DNA was detected in the Pamir Mountains in 2022, which are within the Tien Shan dhole's range, so it is most likely rediscovered (List of Asian animals extinct in the Holocene). The one that might be extinct instead is the Ussuri dhole, which as pointed in Makenov above has not been seen since 2008 and in an area so close to the Tien Shan dhole's range that it might even be it instead. The last record around Ussuri is from the 1970s. I don't believe the photos of supposed Ussuri dholes in captivity in theUssuri dholearticle are actually Ussuri dholes.Menah the Great(talk)16:58, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
