Thomas Carell(born 1966) is a Germanbiochemist.

Carell was born in 1966 inHerfordGermany,he studied chemistry from 1985 till 1990 at theUniversity of Münsterfinishing with a diploma thesis at theMax Planck Institute for Medical ResearchHeidelberg.After his PhD thesis onPorphyrinchemistry at the same institute, he did his postdoctoral at theMassachusetts Institute of Technologyin 1993. He finished hishabilitationonDNA repairproteinsat theEidgenössischen Technischen HochschuleZürichin 1998. From 2000 till 2004 he was Professor for organic chemistry at theUniversity of Marburguntil he became Professor for organic chemistry at theLudwig Maximilian University of Munich.His main interest is still theDNA repairsystem.

In 2004, he received theGottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prizeof theDeutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft,which is the highest honour awarded inGermanresearch. In 2008, he was awarded theOtto Bayer Prize[de]for his work on theDNA repairsystems. In 2008 he became a member of theGerman Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.[1]

Since 2010, Professor Carell has been an Associate Editor ofChemical Science,the flagship general chemistry journal published bythe Royal Society of Chemistry
