Tokkeis amunicipalityinTelemarkcounty,Norway.It is located in thetraditional districtofVest-Telemark.Theadministrative centreof the municipality is the village ofDalen.Other villages in Tokke includeÅmdals Verk,Eidsborg,Høydalsmo,Lårdal,andØvre Byrte.TheEidsborg Stave Churchis one of Norway's oldstave churchesand it is located in Eidsborg, just north of Dalen.[4]

The 985-square-kilometre (380 sq mi) municipality is the 117th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Tokke is the 268th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 2,198. The municipality'spopulation densityis 2.4 inhabitants per square kilometre (6.2/sq mi) and its population has decreased by 3.8% over the previous 10-year period.[5][6]

During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of theSchei Committee.On 1 January 1964, the neighboring municipalities ofLårdal(population: 1,929) andMo(population: 1,658) were merged to form the new municipality of Tokke.[7]

Name

The municipality is named after the local riverTokke(Old Norse:Þotka). The name is related to the name of the lakeTotak(from which the river originates). The river name is probably derived from the Old Norse wordþotmeaning "roaring", "rushing", or "howling".[4][8]

Coat of arms

Thecoat of armswas granted on 6 February 1987. The officialblazonis "Orabearpassantsable"(Norwegian:På gulll grunn ein gåande svart bjørn). This means the arms have afield(background) with a tincture ofOrwhich means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. Thechargeis a bear which is displayed with atinctureofsablewhich means it is black. The bear symbolizes the rich nature in theforestsin the municipality. The bear also plays a major role in many locallegendsand stories. The arms were designed by Stein Davidsen. The municipal flag has the same design as the coat of arms.[9][10][11]

Geography

Tokke Municipality is located in theVest-Telemarkregion. It borders the municipalities ofVinje,Kviteseid,Seljord,Fyresdal(inTelemark) and the municipalities ofValleandBykle(inAgder). The highest peak isUrdenosiwhich is 1,520 metres (4,990 ft) above sea level. Other mountains in Tokke includingBrandsnutene,Gråsteinsnosi,Sæbyggjenuten,Stølsdalsnutane,andSvolhusgreini.The riverTokkeand the lakesBandak,Botnedalsvatn,andByrtevatnare all located in the municipality as well.

Government

Tokke Municipality is responsible forprimary education(through 10th grade), outpatienthealth services,senior citizenservices,welfareand othersocial services,zoning,economic development,and municipalroadsand utilities. The municipality is governed by amunicipal councilofdirectly electedrepresentatives. Themayorisindirectly electedby a vote of the municipal council.[12]The municipality is under the jurisdiction of theTelemark District Courtand theAgder Court of Appeal.
