Tri-state area

Tri-state areais an informal term in theUnited Stateswhich can refer to any of multiple areas that lie across threestates.When referring to populated areas, the term implies a shared economy or culture among the area's residents, typically concentrated around a central metropolis.

Tri-state areas may or may not include a state boundarytripoint.

Tri-state areas by region

The following is not an exhaustive list. "Tri-state area" may refer to several additional places in locally understood contexts, such as a business name.

Northeast

• TheNew York tri-state area,which includes parts ofNew York,New JerseyandConnecticut.Pennsylvaniais sometimes included in the meaning of this usage of the term, since the New Yorkmetropolitan statistical area,as defined by theU.S. Census Bureau,includes a small part of the state of PA.
• ThePhiladelphia tri-state area,which includes parts ofPennsylvania,New Jersey,andDelaware.This use of "tri-state" excludesMarylandeven though its northeast corner is closely tied to Philadelphia.
• ThePittsburgh tri-state area,covering parts ofPennsylvania,Ohio,andWest Virginia.
• Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia
• TheErie tri-state area,which includes parts of northwestPennsylvania,OhioandNew York.
• TheMinisink Valley tri-state area,which includes parts ofNew York,PennsylvaniaandNew Jersey.
• New York,VermontandMassachusetts
• TheBerkshires,a region usually considered to include only westernMassachusettsand northwesternConnecticut;when theTaconicportion ofNew Yorkis included, the area is sometimes described as the "tri-state" or "tri-corners" area.

Midwest

• TheChicago tri-state area,or "Chicagoland,"which includes northeastIllinois,Northwest Indianaand southeastWisconsin.TheTri-State Tollwayconnects Wisconsin's portion with Indiana's. Parts of southwestMichiganin theMichianaregion are also culturally tied to Chicago.
• TheIllinois–Indiana–Kentucky tri-state area,centered around theconfluenceof theWabashandOhio Rivers.
• TheCincinnati tri-state area,which includes parts ofOhio,KentuckyandIndiana.
• Kyova,a region named forKentucky,OhioandWestVirginiaand home toTri-State Airport.
• TheDubuque tri-state area,which includes parts ofIowa,IllinoisandWisconsin.
• TheFort Madison-Keokuk tri-state area,also known as theQuincytri-state area, which includes parts ofIowa,IllinoisandMissouri.
• TheSioux City metropolitan arearegion ofIowa,Nebraska,andSouth Dakota.
• TheLa Crosse tri-state area,which includes parts ofWisconsin,MinnesotaandIowa.
• TheTri-State district,aleadandzincminingregion ofOklahoma,KansasandMissouri,known for producing "tri-state" minerals consisting mainly ofsphalerite.

South

• TheDMV,which includes the city ofWashington(coterminous with the District of Columbia) as well as surrounding portions ofMarylandandVirginia.Although the District of Columbia is not a state, the region is sometimes referred to as a "tri-state area." Furthermore, the Washington–Arlington–Alexandriametropolitan statistical area,as defined by theU.S. Census Bureau,includesJefferson County, West Virginia,making the region a true tri-state area.
• TheDelmarvaarea, which includesDelawareand the eastern shores ofMarylandandVirginia.
• Greater Memphisor theMid-South,which includes westTennessee,northwestMississippi,and theDelta regionofArkansas.
• TheWiregrass Region,which includes southeastAlabama,southernGeorgiaand theFlorida Panhandle.
• TheArk-La-Tex,a socioeconomic region that includes thirty-nine counties/parishes inArkansas,LouisianaandTexas.

West

• TheInland Northwest,historically and alternatively known as the Inland Empire, which includesWashington,Idaho,andOregon.
• The tri-state area ofBullhead City, Arizona,Needles, California,andLaughlin, Nevada.
