Tsit Yuen Lam

Tsit Yuen Lam(Chinese:Lâm tiết huyền;pinyin:Lín Jiéxuán;[1]born 6 February 1942[2]) is a Hong Kong-American mathematician specializing inalgebra,especiallyring theoryandquadratic forms.

Academic career

Lam earned his bachelor's degree at theUniversity of Hong Kongin 1963 and hisPh.D.atColumbia Universityin 1967 underHyman Bass,with a thesis titledOnGrothendieck Groups.[3]Subsequently, he was an instructor at theUniversity of Chicagoand since 1968 he has been at theUniversity of California, Berkeley,where he became assistant professor in 1969, associate professor in 1972, and full professor in 1976. He served as assistant department head several times. From 1995 to 1997 he was Deputy Director of theMathematical Sciences Research InstituteinBerkeley, California.[2]

Among his doctoral students isRichard Elman.[3]

Awards and honors

From 1972 to 1974 he was aSloan Fellow;in 1978–79 aMillerResearch Professor; and in 1981–82 aGuggenheim Fellow.In 1982 he was awarded theLeroy P. Steele Prizefor his textbooks.[4]

In 2012 he became a fellow of theAmerican Mathematical Society.[5]
