"Tu es foutu"(English:" You're screwed/fucked ") is a song by Italian dancer and singer-songwriterIn-Grid.It was released in December 2001 as thelead singlefrom her debut album,Rendez-vous(2003). An English version of the song titled "You Promised Me"(French:" Tu m'as promis ") was also released in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries." "Tu es foutu" describes the end of a relationship. In-Grid tells her lover that she is fed up with his empty promises and says angrily that he is "screwed" / "fucked" (the literal meaning of "tu esfoutu"in French). The lyrics were written by In-Grid and Marco Soncini, who also produced the song.[1]The English version was also co-written by Daniela Galli (also known asDhany) and Paul Sears.[2]
"Tu es foutu" first charted in Greece in March 2002,[3]reaching number one in June.[4]Throughout the rest of 2002, the song began to appear on more European charts, starting with Switzerland (May),[5]France (June),[6]Italy (July),[7]and the Netherlands (July), becoming a top-three hit in the last nation.[8]In September, the song debuted on Belgium'sFlemish Singles Chart,where it rose to the number-two position for four consecutive weeks,[9]and on theRomanian Top 100,[10]where it soon reached number three.[11]The following month, it began its German chart run at number 93, taking 24 weeks to reach its highest position, number nine.[12]In October, the single began to garner radio airplay in Hungary,[13]eventually topping the country's radio chart in February 2003.[14]
In late 2002, "Tu es foutu" charted in theNordic countries.The song appeared at number 43 on theSwedish Singles Charton 28 November 2002, then rose up the listing until peaking at number one for two weeks in January 2003.[15]On the final chart week of 2002, it appeared on Norway'sVG-listachart and rose to number three after four more weeks.[16]The song then gained success in Denmark and Finland, reaching number two in the former country and number seven in the latter.[17][18]In March 2003, it achieved its peak of number 23 on theEurochart Hot 100.[19]The same month, "You Promised Me" debuted at number 11 in Australia, later peaking at number seven.[20]In New Zealand, "You Promised Me" debuted at number 32 on 8 June and peaked at number 17 the following week.[21]In the United States, the song entered the top 10 on threeBillboarddance listings, finding its highest position of number two on theHot Dance Singles Saleschart.[22]
