Tullow(/ˈtʊl/;Irish:An Tulach,meaning 'the hillock',[2]formerlyTulach Ó bhFéidhlim/ Tullowphelim) is a market town inCounty Carlow,Ireland. It is located on theRiver Slaneywhere theN81 roadintersects with theR725.As of 2022,the population was 5,138.[1]

History

Anglo-Norman landownerHugh de Lacybuilt a castle in Tullowc. 1181at the site of a crossing on the river Slaney.[3]The castle was captured byOliver Cromwellin 1650.[4]There are no extant remains of the castle and the circumstances of its demolition are uncertain.[5]The castle may have been pulled down during the reign ofQueen Anneand the stones used in the construction of a barracks in the town.[4]

A monastery and school was founded in the fifth-century in Tullow by St Fortchern (orFortiarnán), a pupil ofSt PatrickandSt Lommán.Although there are no traces of the monastery today, a granite font and cross base at St. Columba's Church in Tullow may be associated with it.[6]Tullowphelimholy wellis located on Barrack Street in Tullow. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus. It is reputed to be the site of the monastery founded by St Fortiarnán.[6]The current shrine dates to the 1920s. Apatternwas held annually on 8 September until about 1800.[7]TheBook of Lecanand theBook of Ballymotemention that Saint Darchaorthainn (Derchartainn) and her sister St.Eithnethe daughters of Cormac were nuns at Tullow and are believed to be buried in the vicinity.[8]They along with Fortchern andToranannare regarded as the patron saints of Tullow.[9]

Tullow was also the site of anAugustinianfriary.[10]During thedissolution of the monasteries,the land belonging to the friary was granted toJames Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond.Similarly to Tullow Castle, the friary buildings were demolished but the exact date is uncertain.[11]The Abbey Cemetery is located within the site of the former monastery.

There is a statue ofFather John Murphy,one of the leaders of the1798 Rebellion,who was captured near Tullow and executed in the Market Square on 2 July. There is a smallmuseumwith information about this period and other local history located in the former Tullow Methodist church on Bridge Street.[12]

Saint Patrick's are the GAA club in Tullow who currently compete in theCarlow Junior A Football Championshipand have been crowned champions on ten occasions. They also compete in theCarlow Intermediate Hurling Championship.

Association football

Parkville United AFC, who play at Hawkins Lane Tullow, compete in the Carlow premier division and Slaney Rovers AFC from Rathvilly, who play at Tullow town pitch.

Rugby union

Darts

Emerald Darts are a Darts Academy situated at Floor 1 Post Office Sorting Office (At The Back Of Supervalu) who are the ONLY Darts Academy in Ireland who compete against other Darts Academies worldwide in the Junior Darts Corporation (JDC) grading system affiliated to The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and various national tournaments, Kian Cullen represented Emerald Darts in the JDC European Championships in the UK in December 2016. Emerald Darts are proudly sponsored by Unicorn Darts the biggest dart manufacturer in the world.

Railway

The town wasat one timeconnected to theIrish railway network,on a branch line fromNaasinCounty Kildare.Tullow railway station opened on 1 June 1886, closed for passenger and goods traffic in 1947 and finally closed on 1 April 1959.[15]

Bus

Bus Éireannroute 132 provides a once a day each way (Mondays to Fridays inclusive) commuter link toDublinviaTallaght.There are also a limited range (usually one/two journeys a day each way) ofBus ÉireannExpressway services linking the town toDublin,New Ross,WaterfordandRosslare Europort.JJ Kavanagh and Sonsroute fromHacketstowntoCarlowalso serves the town. The main stopping place for buses is on the Square.

Weather

A local weather station operates in Tullow, which records all local weather and provides a five-day local forecast.[16]Tullow recorded the lowest temperature in 2010 at −17.7 °C. It is also based in a basin so the weather patterns are slightly different.
