USSLaboon(DDG-58)is anArleigh Burke-classdestroyerin theUnited States Navy. She is named for FatherJohn Francis Laboon(1921–1988), a captain in theChaplain Corps of the United States Navy,who was awarded theSilver StarduringWorld War IIwhile serving on thesubmarineUSSPeto.

Laboon'skeelwas laid down in 1992 at theBath Iron Worksshipyard inBath, Maine.She waslaunchedin 1993, andcommissionedin 1995.

Laboon'skeel was laid downon 23 March 1992 at theBath Iron Worksshipyard inBath, Maine.She waslaunchedon 20 February 1993.Laboonwascommissionedon 18 March 1995.

In the fall of 1996, she firedTomahawk missilesat targets inIraq,thus becoming the firstArleigh Burke-class destroyer to engage in combat.[4]

In 1998,Laboontook part inNATOExercise Dynamic Response 98, together withUSSWasp'sAmphibious Ready Group.[5]

On 12 September 2012,Laboonwas ordered to the coast ofLibyain whatthe Pentagoncalled a "contingency" in case a strike was ordered. This was in response to the2012 diplomatic missions attacks.[6]

On 21 June 2015,Laboonentered theBlack Seaalong with the French shipDupuy de Lômeas part ofNATO's presence missions following theAnnexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation.[7]While in the Black Sea,Laboonparticipated in joint maneuvers with aRomanian NavyRear-Admiral Eustațiu Sebastian-classcorvettefor two days beginning on 22 June 2015.[citation needed]On 27 June 2015,Laboonbegan a two-day visit to the Black Sea port ofBatumi,Georgia,to participate in training with theCoast Guard of Georgiaand offer tours of the ship.[8]

On 14 April 2018, she fired sevenTomahawkmissiles from a position in theRed Seaas part of abombing campaignin retaliation for the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons against people inDouma.[9]

2023 Israel-Hamas war

On 14 October 2023, U.S. Secretary of DefenseLloyd AustindirectedDwight D. Eisenhowerand her carrier strike group, which includes the cruiserPhilippine Sea,along withLaboon,and sister-destroyersMasonandGravely,to theeastern Mediterraneanin response toIsrael's war with Hamas.[10]This was the second carrier strike group to be sent to the region in response to the conflict, followingGerald R. Fordand her group, which was dispatched only six days earlier.[11]

On 23 December 2023, while patrolling in the southernRed Sea,Laboonshot down four unmanned aerial attack drones that originated from areas controlled by theIranian-backedHouthirebels inYemenand were inbound towardLaboon.[12][13]

On 26 December 2023, theUSS Laboonshot down threeanti-ship ballistic missilein theRed Seafired byHouthirebels with multiple SM-6. This was the first intercept of a ballistic missile in combat.[14]

On 6 January 2024,Laboonshot down a Houthi drone in the Red Sea.[15]

On Jan. 9, at approximately 9:15 p.m. (Sanaa time), Iranian-backed Houthis launched a complex attack of Iranian designed one-way attack UAVs (OWA UAVs), anti-ship cruise missiles, and an anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen into the Southern Red Sea, towards international shipping lanes where dozens of merchant vessels were transiting. Eighteen OWA UAVs, two anti-ship cruise missiles, and one anti-ship ballistic missile were shot down by a combined effort of F/A-18s fromDwight D. Eisenhower,Gravely,USS Laboon (DDG 58),USSMason,and the United Kingdom’sHMSDiamond.This is the 26th Houthi attack on commercial shipping lanes in the Red Sea since Nov. 19. There were no injuries or damage reported.[16]

On 14 January 2024, ananti-ship missilewas fired in the direction ofLaboonfrom a Houthi-controlled portion of Yemen, according toCENTCOM.[17]

On 2 February 2024,LaboonandF/A-18 Super Hornetsfrom theUSS Dwight D. Eisenhowershot down at least 12 drones launched by Houthis over theRed Sea.[18]

On February 6, 2024 at 4:30 p.m., while patrolling in the Gulf of AdenUSS Laboon (DDG 58),operating near M/V Star Nasia, intercepted and shot down an anti-ship ballistic missile fired by the Iranian-backed Houthis.[19]

On 20 February 2024 at 12:30 a.m., while operating in theGulf of Aden,Laboondetected and shot down one anti-ship cruise missile fired by the Houthis.[20]
