ValajiorValachiis arāgaminCarnatic music(musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is a pentatonic scale (audavaorowdavarāgam, which means "of 5" ). It is ajanyarāgam (derived scale), as it does not have all the sevenswaras(musical notes). The equivalent ofValajiinHindustani musicisKalāvati.[1][2]
Structure and Lakshana[edit]
Valajiis a symmetric rāgam that does not containrishabhamormadhyamam.It is a pentatonic scale (audava-audavarāgam[1][2]in Carnatic music classification). Itsārohaṇa-avarohaṇastructure (ascending and descending scale) is as follows (seeswarasin Carnatic musicfor details on below notation and terms):

Valajiis considered ajanyarāgam ofChakravakam,the 16thMelakartarāgam, though it can be derived from other melakarta rāgams,Harikambhoji,Vagadheeswari,Ramapriya,VachaspatiorNasikabhooshani,by dropping bothrishabhamandmadhyamam.SinceChakravakamis lowest in ordinal number among these 6melakartascales,Valajiis associated with it.
