SylteorValldalis a village inFjord MunicipalityinMøre og Romsdalcounty,Norway.The village is situated at the southern end of theValldalenvalley along the shore of theNorddalsfjordennear the mouth of the Valldøla river, just west of the entrance to theTafjorden.The 0.71-square-kilometre (180-acre) village has a population (2012) of 411. This gives the village a population density of 579 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,500/sq mi).[1]
The village is located about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) northeast of the village ofEidsdal(across the fjord), and it is about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) northwest of the village ofTafjordwhich is accessed via several long tunnels including theHeggur Tunnel.Norwegian County Road 63runs north through Sylte on its way through theValldalenvalley up to theTrollstigenarea.
The village is home to many industries, including production ofcementand wood products,fish farming,andtourism.The newspaperStorfjordnyttis published in Sylte.[3]Sylte Churchis located here.[4]The name originates from an older word in dialect meaning wet lowland.[5]
The village was theadministrative centerof the oldNorddal Municipalityuntil 2020.
