Zahida Malik(born 26 February), better known asVeena Malik,is a Pakistani actress, TV host, reality television personality and model who has appeared inPakistaniandBollywoodfilms.[3][4][5][non-primary source needed]Veena made her film debut in 2000 withSajjad Gul'sTere Pyar Mein.In 2002, she starred in Akbar Khan'sYeh Dil Aap Ka HuwaandSassi Punnoand later played roles in female-centric films such asKoi Tujh Sa Kahan(2005) andMohabbatan Sachiyan(2007). She was a contestant onBigg Bossin 2010.

Veena was born as Zahida Malik[6]on 26 February[7][8]inRawalpindi,Punjab, Pakistan,[9]to Malik Mohammad Aslam and his wife, Zeenat Malik.[10]

In 2002, Veena hosted thePrime TVseries,Prime Gupshup[11]for them ushering a new direction for her comic skills and she improvised on the hour-long show occasionally mimicking actors.

Veena hosted theGeo TVshowHum Sub Umeed Se Hain,in which she was hailed for her comedic parodies.[12][13] In 2007, she appeared at theLux Style Awardsand was awarded as being theMost stylish celebrity on the carpet.[13]

In October 2010, Veena appeared in the Indian television reality showBigg BossSeason 4.[14] She was evicted two weeks before the finals, and was one of the final six contestants out of the original fourteen who had participated.[15]Veena was also part of the finale of the show.[16]After herBigg Bossstay, she was mentioned in the media as the voice of liberalMuslims,including leading dailies,Daily Times,[17]Express Tribune,[18]andThe Australian.[19]Sabbah Hajim, from the Haji Amina Charity Trust inJammu and Kashmir,writing in the magazineTehelka,when comparing her with liberal rector ofDarul Uloom Deobandsaid, "these two newly public figures might teachMuslimsto stop feeling eternally outraged. In February 2011,[21]Veena became part of the Cricket World Cup reality show[22]in Delhi, India, called "Big Toss." Big Toss was a reality game show with contestants and Veena as the captain of one team, againstRakhi Sawant[23]and her team.

In March 2011, Veena engaged in a passionate debate with amufti,who claimed she had engaged in immoral behaviour as a contestant onBigg Boss,even though he admitted to not having watched the show. Veena countered pointing out the double standards of Pakistani media against women among other rebuttals.[24]

Another showVeena Malik – Veena Ka Vivahwas planned where Veena would search for her soul-mate, but the show was cancelled whenImagine TV,the channel on which the show was being shown, announced that it was shutting down.[25]Veena collected almost 71,000 entries from all over the world for the show.[26]

Veena made her acting debut alongsideShaanandZara Sheikhin Askari'sTere Pyar Mein(2000). She played a supporting role in the film and was barely acknowledged. Later on, she appeared in a supporting role inJaved Sheikh'sYeh Dil Aap Ka Huwa(2002).[27]

In 2003, Veena appeared in Indo-Pak cross venture Punjabi filmPind Di Kudiwhich failed commercially. She also appeared in Askari'sSassi Punno(2003) alongsideSanaandMoammar Rana.She then appeared in Rafique'sJageer.Her breakthrough role was in Reema Khan'sKoi Tujh Sa Kahan.In the same year, she played the parallel lead role of Farwa in fantasy filmNaag aur Nagin.

In 2008, Veena appeared in Rafique's Punjabi film,Mohabbatan Sachiyan,alongside Babrik Shah and newcomers Maria Khan and Adnan Khan. The film went on to become a commercial success.[28]The same year, she appeared in Raza'sKabhi Pyar Na Karnain a supporting role.

In 2012, Veena debuted inBollywoodwith anitem songinGali Gali Mein Chor Haientitled "Chhanno". Then in the same month she did another item song "Fann Ban Gayi" inTere Naal Love Ho Gaya.Then she made her acting debut with a comedyDaal Mein Kuch Kaala Hai.In 2013, her first film was Rajiv S. Ruia's social dramaZindagi 50 50in which she played a prostitute. She appeared in the music video "Ac Chala Garmi Badi Hai" sung bySukhdeep Grewal.Then she made a special appearance in Punjabi film,Jatts in Golmaalin an item song "Shabboo". She then made herKannadafilm debut and appeared inDirty Picture: Silk Sakkath Hotin which she portrayed the life of actressSilk Smithafor which she gained 5 kg.[29]Her last film of 2013 wasSuper Model.Veena played a supermodel, a small town girl who becomes a success in the fashion industry. Her last Bollywood film wasHemant Madhukar'sMumbai 125 KM 3Dthat was released in 2014.

Personal life

While inBigg Boss,Malik's relationship with another contestantAshmit Patelreceived significant media attention.[30][31][32]In a 2013 conversation withThe Times of India,Malik revealed that she and Patel dated for a while after the reality show ended, but they did not have any "physical relationship".[31]In another interview withHindustan Times,however, the actress said she never met Patel post-Bigg Bossand he was never her friend.[32]

Malik married businessman Asad Bashir Khan Khattak on 25 December 2013 inDubai.[4]They have two children together. They divorced in 2018.[citation needed]

Malik is aMuslimand claims to have visitedKaabathrice.[33]

Philanthropy

Veena has worked as a representative at theWorld Health Organizationfor two years.[when?]She also sponsors a child at theSOS Children's Village,an NGO based in Pakistan working with orphaned children.[34]

Veena broke theGuinness World Recordsfor getting maximum kisses on her birthday in a span of one minute[35][36]beatingSalman Khanwho held the record achieved on the reality showGuinness World Records – Ab India Todega.[37]

In 2012 she was ranked at No. 26 onFHM India's "100 sexiest women list" which includedAngelina Jolie,Megan Fox,Paris Hilton,Kim Kardashian,Shilpa ShettyandSonam Kapoor.[38]

Controversy resulted in Pakistan over a nude image of Veena on the cover ofFHMmagazine India edition in which she had "ISI" written on her upper arm – the initials of Pakistan'sInter-Services Intelligencespy agency.[39]Veena says she was topless[40]but did not pose completely nude,[41]and has sued the magazine over the images.[42]

Alleged relationship with her digital manager

In January 2014, shortly after Malik married Khan Khattak, her then-digital manager Prashant Pratap Singh alleged that she was in a live-in relationship with him, and also produced some intimate photographs as evidence.[43]He also claimed that Malik owed him Rs. 1.5 crore and she was pregnant with his child.[44][45]As a counter, Malik accused Pratap Singh of "trying to frame her for money and cheap publicity", and claimed him to be a gay.[46][47]

In November 2014, Veena and her husband Asad were sentenced to 26 years in prison by aGilgitcourt for allegedly airing a blasphemous programme.[48]The owner of Pakistan's biggest media group, Geo TV and Jang group, was accused of allowing the airing of the blasphemous programme by Geo television in May, which played a religious song while staging a mock marriage of Veena with Bashir. A fine ofRs.1.3 million(US$4,502) was also set. The judge sentenced Veena and Bashir and TV host Shaista Wahidi to 26 years each.[49][50]She planned to appeal.[51]They have yet to serve any time, as the ruling is not enforceable outside Gilgit.[52]
