Abraadworst(Dutch pronunciation:[ˈbraːtʋɔrst]) orverse worstis a large Dutch sausage, most often composed ofporkfor its meat to fat ratio, althoughbeeforvealcan be used too. The meat is spiced withpepperandnutmeg,but other spices and herbs such ascloves,sage,fennelseed,corianderseed, orjuniper berriescan be used in addition.[1][2]Along withrookworstit is the most common sausage served along most varieties ofstamppotbut is eaten with other dishes as well and can be found throughout theNetherlandsandFlanders.

The namebraadworstisDutchforroast sausage,whereasverse worstsimply meansfresh sausage(as opposed to dried or cured sausages).

Typically the sausage ispan friedwith a large complement of butter, though during the summertime it is not uncommon to see the sausage on abarbecue.

In the Dutch language the namebraadworstis occasionally used for the GermanBratwurstas well, though the sausages involved are very different.[citation needed]Bratwurstsare also referred to by their native name or are calledDuitse braadworstwhich meansGerman braadworst.

The Dutchverse worstorbraadworstis the direct ancestor of the internationally more knownAfrikanerboerewors,to which it still bears great resemblance.
