Vishal Kaith(born 22 July 1996) is an Indian professionalfootballerwho plays as agoalkeeperforIndian Super LeagueclubMohun Baganand theIndia national team.

Early life and career

Having come up through the state level ranks forHimachal Pradesh,he was recruited by theAIFFto play for the under-16 and under-19 national sides before joining theAIFF Elite Academyin 2011 to play in the under-19 national league, before being picked up by Shillong Lajong.[1]

Vishal Kaith joinedShillong Lajongon 21 July 2014 after spending a year at theAIFF Elite Academy.[2]He played an important role in title winning run of the reserve team inShillong Premier Leagueand conceded just 10 goals from 17 games throughout the tournament.[3]He made his official debut in the second game of his teams'2014-15 Indian Federation CupagainstSalgaocarand was adjudged as the Man of the Match despite a 2–1 loss.[4]Kaith would go on to obtain the Man of the Match award in his second first team appearance againstMohun Bagandespite a 1–0 loss.[5]Kaith made his seniorI-Leaguedebut on 28 March 2015 againstSporting Goain a 1–1 draw but was sent off in the 50th minute for a handball outside the box.[6]

Kaith showed good progress in pre-season for the new season and he became a pivotal part of the club. He started in the final of 2015 Shillong Premier League againstRoyal Wahingdohon 21 November where he made a big mistake by throwing the ball to Royal Wahingdoh Forward,Nagen Tamangwhich resulted in an equaliser but Lajong managed to win the final 2–1 in extra time.[7] He started in the first match of2015-16 I-Leagueseason againstMumbai FCwhich ended in a 0–0 stalemate. This was Vishal's first ever cleansheet on professional level[8]Under the guidance ofThangboi Singto,Kaith became the first choice goalkeeper for Shillong Lajong in entire season. He started in fifteen games and kept five important clean sheets with Shillong finish sixth in league. He also played in Lajong's all four games in2015–16 Indian Federation Cupwhere Lajong defeatedEast Bengalin first leg of quarterfinals 2–1 and second leg ended in a 2–2 draw after extra time.[9][10] Lajong lost toMohun Baganin first leg of semi-finals 5–0 and second leg ended in a 0–0 draw.[11][12]

Loan To Pune City

On 25 May 2016,Indian Super LeagueclubPune Citysigned Kaith on loan fromShillong Lajongfor the third edition ofIndian Super Leaguewhere he was third choice keeper and made no appearances during the season.[13]

Return from loan and departure

He returned to Lajong ahead of2016-17 I-Leagueseason. He made his competitive return in Lajong colours in a 3–0 loss to defending championsBengaluru FC.[14]He played in all league games and kept three cleansheets. Lajong ended their campaign with a 1–1 draw to eventual championsAizawl FC.[15]He also played in all group games ofFederation Cupwhere first two games ended in a 3–2 loss toBengaluru FCandMohun Baganrespectively. He received a straight red card in the seventy fifth minute of last group game againstDSK Shiva gian swhich ended in a 3–2 win but not enough to help Lajong qualify for semifinals.[16]

Pune City

On 7 July 2017, Vishal Kaith signed forFC Pune Citypermanently with the transfer fee reported to be 80 lakh Indian Rupees.[17]He made hisIndian Super Leaguedebut on 3 December 2017 in a 1–0 loss toChennaiyin.[18]7 days later, he kept his first cleansheet in next game againstJamshedpurin a 1–0 away win.[19]He started in both legs of semifinal againstBengaluru FCwhere the first leg ended in a goalless draw and second leg in a 3–1 loss.[20]He kept 7 cleansheets in 17 games in the league. He also started in the 3–2 loss to his former clubShillong Lajongin round of 16 ofinaugural Super Cup.[21]The next season, he missed the pre season due to national duty. He played his first game of the season in a 1–1 draw toDelhi Dynamoswhich was the first game of2018-19 ISL season.[22]After starting in first four league games, he lost his number one spot toKamaljit Singhand failed to make any more appearance.

Chennaiyin

On August 31, 2019, Vishal Kaith signed forChennaiyinon a long-term permanent deal with the club after spending the previous three seasons atPune City.[23]He made his debut for Chennaiyin on 23 October 2019 in a 3–0 loss toFC Goa.[24]4 days later, he kept his first cleansheet in a 0–0 stalemate againstMumbai City.[25]Chennai finished fourth in regular season and qualified for semifinals. He started in both the legs againstGoaas Chennai won first leg 4–1 and lost second leg 4–2 but qualified for final on a 6–5 aggregate score.[26] He was in between the sticks in the2020 ISL finalas Chennai lost toATK3–1 atFatorda Stadium.[27]This was Vishal's first ever major final. He kept 4 cleansheets in 20 appearances in the season.

He played his first game of2020-21 ISL seasonin a 2–1 win againstJamshedpuron 24 November 2020.[28]5 days later, he kept his first cleansheet of the season in a goalless draw againstKerala Blasters.[29]On 4 January 2021, He played his 50th ISL match againstHyderabad FCwhich ended in a 4–1 loss.[30]He kept six cleansheets in twenty appearances in the season. He started the2021-22 ISL seasonwith a cleansheet againstHyderabadin a 1–0 win.[31]He soon lost his first choice custodian place toDebjit Majumderand ended the season with only two cleansheets in nine appearances. He departed Chennai at the end of the season after spending three seasons.[32]

Mohun Bagan SG

2022–23: ISL Champion and AFC Cup

In June 2022, Vishal Kaith signed forMohun Bagan SGon a three-year deal.[33]He made his debut in a 1–1 draw againstMumbai CityinDurand Cupon 24 August.[34]4 days later, he kept his first cleansheet for The Mariners in a 1–0Kolkata Derbyvictory over arch rivalsEast Bengal.[35]2 weeks later, he made his continental debut in 3–1 loss toKuala Lumpur CityinInter-zone play-off semi-finalsofAFC Cup.[36]He played his first ISL game in 2–1 loss to his former clubChennaiyinwhere he gave away a penalty toKwame Karikariwhich costed a goal.[37]Mohun Bagan finished third in regular season and managed to qualify forplayoffs.[38]He felt unconscious after a collision withDiego Mauriciowhere the elbow of latter crashed into the former.[39]The situation reached such a stage that an ambulance entered the pitch with great speed. Despite Kaith saying "I am okay", he was subbed off, left the field on feet and sent to hospital for scans in an eventual 2–0 win overOdisha FCin knockout round.[40]He recovered from every possible injury and started in both legs of semifinal againstHyderabad FCwhich both ended goalless. He saved two penalties in the 4–3 shootout victory and was adjudged with Hero of the match award.[41]

He started in2023 ISL finalagainstBengaluru FCon 18 March 2023 which was his second, the first one being in 2020. The match went into shootout after a 2–2 draw. Vishal once again became a hero and saved two penalties in 4–3 shootout win guiding his team to first ever ISL Trophy.[42]He was awarded with golden glove for keeping 12 cleansheets in 24 appearances which was the highest in the league.[43]He was also named in the ISL Team Of The Season.[44]He also started in 3–0 and 1–0 losses toJamshedpurandGoarespectively inSuper Cup.[45]He ended the season inIndian club qualifiers for 2023–24 AFC competitionswhere he registered his third shootout victory in 4–3 win overHyderabadafter a 1–1 draw helping his team sealAFC Cup qualifying play-offspot.[46]He was named as Mohun Bagan Player of the Year(Shibdas Bahaduri Award) for keeping 14 cleansheets in 31 appearances in the season and making many stellar saves.[47]

2023–: Durand Cup, ISL 100th and Mohun Bagan 50th Appearance

He started the season with a cleansheet againstPunjab FCin a 2–0 win inDurand Cup.[48]He started in the2023 Durand Cup finalagainst rivalsEast Bengal.[49]He was heavily tested byNandhakumar Sekarand other forwards but he saved all six shots on target and kept a cleansheet in an eventual 1–0 victory in theKolkata Derby.[50][51]He won the golden glove of the tournament for keeping two cleansheets and conceding only three goals.[52]He kept his firstAFC Cupcleansheet in opening group stage match againstOdisha FCin a 4–0 win atKalinga Stadiumon 19 September.[53]He played his first2023-24 ISLgame against newly promotedPunjab FCin a 3–1 win and kept his first cleansheet in next game againstBengaluruwhich ended in a 1–0 win.[54][55]He played his 100th ISL match in a 2–2 draw against Odisha on 6 December and then started in the next game which was his 50th Mohun Bagan game againstNorthEast United FCwhich ended in a 3–1 win.[56][57]

Kaith was handed hisIndia U19debut on 4 October 2013 againstQatar U19in2014 AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers.Kaith kept first clean sheet for India U19 againstNepal U19,in which India U19 defeated Nepal U19 by 1–0. In July 2017, Kaith represented India U23 inAFC U23 Championship Qualifierswhich held in Qatar.

Senior

Kaith received his maiden call-up forIndian teamcamp forAFC Asian Cup Qualifiersmatch againstKyrgyzstanon 13 June 2017.[58]After being named in squad multiple times as a backup keeper, he was named as the first choice keeper for2018 SAFF Championshipas team managerStephen Constantinedecided fo field a young squad.[59]He played in all games where he got his first cleansheets in group games againstSri LankaandMaldiveswhere both ended in a 2–0 win.[60]He conceded his first goal in semifinal 3–1 win over arch-rivalsPakistan.[61]India lost in the final to Maldives 2–1.[62]He was named in squad for2019 AFC Asian Cupand was on bench in all games. He was a part of the team which won2021 SAFF Championship.

Kaith is a talented, complete, aggressive, and often instinctive goalkeeper, who is recognized for his reflexes, prowess, and anticipation when coming off his line in one on one situations, as well as his confidence, goalkeeping technique, reactions, and ability to get to ground quickly to collect, parry, or even challenge for the ball with his feet; when playing in teams that rely upon high defensive lines, he has often functioned as asweeper-keeper,frequently rushing out of his area to clear the ball or face opponents who have beaten the offside trap.[63]
