Vitanje(pronounced[ˈʋiːtanjɛ],formerlyVitanje trg,[2]sometimesVitanjski trg,[2]German:(Markt) Weitenstein[3]) is a small town in northeasternSlovenia.It is the seat of theMunicipality of Vitanje.It lies on theHudinja Rivernorth ofCelje.The area is part of the traditional region ofStyriaand is now included in theSavinja Statistical Region.From the 11th century onwards it became a regional centre and was grantedmarket rightsin 1306.[4]

History

In 1953, the main settlement of Vitanje Trg was merged with neighboringVitanje Vasto create the combined settlement of Vitanje.[5]

Church

Theparish churchin the settlement stands in Vitanje Vas[6]and is dedicated toSaints Peter and Paul.It belongs to theRoman Catholic Diocese of Celje.Itsnavedates to the early 13th century with 14th-centuryfrescos,a 15th-centurysanctuary,and 18th-century sidechapels.[7]A second church in the settlement is dedicated toMary Help of Christians.It was built between 1747 and 1754 and itsspireheightened in 1812.[8]

Cultural centre

In 2012, theCultural Centre of European Space Technologies(KSEVT) was built in Vitanje. The building is on the one hand the main cultural venue of Vitanje and on the other hand an institute for composite research of art and science in space. The KSEVT organizes research activities, exhibitions, conferences, symposia, and educational workshops.
