History

[edit]

In the late '80s and into the '90s the 99.3 frequency wascountry music-formatted WUSJ-FM "US99". In the late '90s, the station found popularity as "Electric 99.3," aTop 40music station. In 2000, a format swap sent the "Electric" branding and format to 94.9WAEZ,where it still is today. 99.3 then became anadult contemporarystation, known as "MIX 99.3" until 2001. The station then flipped torhythmic oldiesas WPJO-FM, a format that lasted until 2003 when the current format took over.

Most recently,Mediabasehas moved the station to theactive rockpanel, under the callsign WTZR (Z-Rock),[2]but the default active rock station isWRZK.The station continued to report on thealternative rockpanel perNielsen BDS.It was currently one of twoalternative rockstations onMediabase'sactive rockpanel, the other beingKFRR,but this changed inMarch 2012when WTZR became the onlyalternative rockstation on the Mediabaseactive rockpanel; KFRR is now once again onMediabase'salternative rockpanel. By April 2012, WTZR flipped toactive rockas it was moved to the BDSactive rockpanel.

On February 21, 2015 WTZR changed their format from active rock to alternative rock, branded as "99.3 The X".[3]On February 23, 2015 WTZR changed their call letters to WEXX, to go with "The X".
