WLBC-FM(104.1MHz) is acommercialFMradio stationinMuncie, Indiana.It is owned by Woof Boom Radio and airs ahot adult contemporaryradio format.Theradio studiosandtransmitterare on East 29th Street in the Southside of Muncie.[2]
WLBC-FM has aneffective radiated powerof 41,000watts.It broadcasts usingHD Radiotechnology. The HD2digital subchannelcarries asimulcastofcountry musicsister stationWBKQ96.7 FM. The HD3 signal carries a simulcast ofThe Life FM,aChristian radioservice. The HD4 signal carries a simulcast of 89.1WSPM,known as "CatholicRadioIndy ". Those subchannels feed threeFM translators.
History
[edit]In October 1947, WLBC-FMsigned onthe air. It was the FM counterpart to WLBC (1340 AM; nowWMUN). WLBC (AM) was established in 1926 in the home of broadcasting pioneer Don Burton on South Jefferson Street in Muncie.[3]Until the 1970s, the two stations mostlysimulcasttheir programming. In 1953, a television station was added on Channel 49, WLBC-TV (todayPBSmember stationWIPB).
In the 1970s WLBC-FM (previously WMUN) was one of the first Indiana FM stations with aTop 40format competing with crosstown AMdaytimerWERK (laterWNAP). At first, WLBC-FM used anautomatedhit music package produced byDrake-ChenaultEnterprises while WLBC (AM) aired traditionalmiddle of the roadprogramming. Over time, livedisc jockeyswere added to WLBC-FM.
An early employee wasChris Schenkel,who later became a topABC-TVsports broadcaster.[4]Schenkel came to WLBC after working atWBAAas a premedical student atPurdue University.Morry Mannies was a sportscaster on WLBC-FM and sister station WXFN. He retired several years ago[when?]after callingBall State Universitysports for many years.
On June 1, 2013, WLBC-FM was acquired by Woof Boom Radio, whose Eastern Indiana cluster includedWERK104.9 FMclassic hits),WHBU1240 AM (talk radio), WXFN 1340 AM (Fox Sports Radio),WMXQ93.5 FM (classic rock) andWBKQ96.7 FM (country music). Woof Boom Radio purchased the stations fromBackyard Broadcastingfor $4.45 million.
Staff
[edit]WLBC-FM is led by owner and president Jeff Chapman and CFO Susan Rodricks. Staff also includes: Steve Lindell (with WLBC since the 1990s) who serves as Director of Operations and Morning Host, Sean Mattingly is the Director of Technical Operations (Chief Engineer), Sue Tschuor (GSM), Kim Morris (more than two decades with WLBC, hosting middays), Jared Boomer (afternoons) and Sidny Grow (evenings).
