Wooburnis a large village inBuckinghamshire,England.[2]It is located off theA4094 roadbetweenWooburn GreenandBourne Endin the very south of the county near theRiver Thames,about two miles south west ofBeaconsfieldand four miles east ofMarlow.Wooburn is one of the two principal settlements withinWooburn,acivil parishinWycombe district.[3]
The villagetoponymis derived from theOld Englishfor "walled stream". This refers to theRiver Wye,which has its source nearWest Wycombeand runs through the village to join the River Thames at Bourne End. The river runs along the boundary ofWarren Nature Reserve,aLocal Nature Reservewhich adjoins Wooburn Park. In theDomesday Bookof 1086 the village was recorded asWabornethough earlier, in 1075, it had been referred to asWaburna.[4][5] TheChurch of England parish churchofSaint Paulis medieval but was extensively altered by theGothic Revival architectWilliam Butterfieldin 1869. It has a flintnaveand a tall tower. There are some half timbered houses facing the churchyard and nearby there is a flint school house.
Themanor houseof Wooburn was once apalaceof theBishops of Lincoln.
The former Wooburn Grange Country Club was used as the exterior of theFawlty Towershotel in the classic 1970s sitcom. The building was destroyed by a fire in 1991, then demolished and a housing estate was built on the site.
