Yeniseysk(Russian:Енисейск,IPA:[jɪnʲɪˈsʲejsk]) is atowninKrasnoyarsk Krai,Russia,located on theYenisei River.Population:18,766 (2010 Census);[3]20,394 (2002 Census);[8]22,891 (1989 Soviet census);[9]20,000 (1970).
History
[edit]Yeniseysk was founded in 1619 as astockadedtown—the first town on the Yenisei River.[2]It played an important role in Russiancolonizationof EastSiberiain the 17th–18th centuries. Its location is due to theSiberian River Routesfrom the Urals, up the Ob, up the Ket River and over a portage to Yeniseysk and from there to the Yenisei basin. It became less important due to road and rail building further south. Its old town is included by the Russian government in the country's tentativeWorld Heritage List.
Administrative and municipal status
[edit]Within theframework of administrative divisions,Yeniseysk serves as theadministrative centerofYeniseysky District,even though it is not a part of it.[1]As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as thekrai townof Yeniseysk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of thedistricts.[1]As amunicipal division,the krai town of Yeniseysk is incorporated asYeniseysk Urban Okrug.[4]

[edit]Yeniseysk has asubarctic climate(Köppen climate classificationDfc), with long, severely cold winters and short, warm summers. Precipitation is moderate, and is somewhat higher in summer than at other times of the year. Being less affected by the drySiberian Highin winter than areas farther east, Yeniseysk has reliably high snowfall by Siberian standards with a total of 207.8 millimetres (8.18 in) of precipitation between October and April, although on average not very high amounts compared to cold climates close to oceans.
