Yuhana Nashmiis an Iraqi-Australian visual artist and ceramicist.[1][2]

Early life[edit]

Nashmi was born inBaghdad,Iraq.[3]Hismalwasha(baptismal name) isRam bar Sharat Semat(Classical Mandaic:ࡓࡀࡌ ࡁࡓ ࡔࡀࡓࡀࡕ ࡎࡉࡌࡀࡕ,romanized:Ram br Šarat Simat). In Iraq, he was initiated as atarmida.He immigrated to Australia in the early 2000s after living inAmman,Jordan from 1998–2000.[4]

Career[edit]

In the mid-2010s, Nashmi collaborated with Christine Robins (néeAllison) of theUniversity of ExeteronThe Worlds of Mandaean Priestsproject to document the Mandaean priesthood. Nashmi served as a field worker and cultural consultant for the project.[5]

In 2018, Nashmi createdSh-ken-ta,an exhibition of ashkinta(reed house used for Mandaean priestly rituals), as a site-specific installation at theCasula Powerhouse Arts Centre.[6][7]

In 2020, Nashmi published the book100 Souls 100 Stories 100 Tiles,a collection of 100 ceramic tiles made by members of theMandaean community in Australia.[4][8]The tiles have been exhibited at theCampbelltown Arts Centre.[9]

Nashmi also exhibited artwork at theGeorges Riverin 2022.[10]As of 2023, he currently works inart psychotherapyand ceramics tutoring, and runs NeshmART Studio in theSydneymetropolitan area.[11]

Personal life[edit]

Nashmi has aLabrador Retrievernamed Neshma (Classical Mandaic:ࡍࡉࡔࡌࡀ,romanized:Nišma,lit.'Soul'; pronounced [ˈniʃma]),[12]who also works as atherapy dog.[4]

Yuhana Nashmi is also known as Sheikh Alaa Nashmi (also spelled Ala’a Nashmi;Arabic:علاء النشمي).[13][14]: 21
