Yujing District(Chinese:Ngọc giếng khu;pinyin:Yùjǐng Qū) is arural districtin easternTainan,Taiwan.It is famous for its cultivation ofmangoes.[1]

After a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit southern Taiwan in March 2010, pillars were severely damaged at Yujing Junior High School forcing school officials to cancel some classes.[2]

History

Yujing, was formerly known asTapani(orTamaniinDutchrecords after 1650's; transliterated asChinese:Tiếu đi 哖;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Ta-pa-nî) inTaivoan,is likely the site ofTapanitribe ofTevorang people[zh],a former political unit of theTaiwanese aborigines.[3]The name has also been spelledTefurang,Tefurangh,Tevoran,Tevourang,andDevoran.[4]Tevorang was one of nine villages that joined in warfare against the people of Favorlang (modern-dayHuwei, Yunlin).

During theKingdom of Tungning,members of theSiraya peoplefrom the Tavocan area (modern-dayXinhua) moved to this area due to conflicts withHan Chinese.

TheTapani Incidentof 1915 was one of the largest armed uprisings by Taiwanese Han and aboriginals againstJapanese rule in Taiwan.

In 1920,political divisions of Taiwan had structural changesand many geographical names were changed into Japanese style. The nameTapaniwas transliterated as in JapaneseTamai(Kanji:Ngọc giếng) and administratively was called Tamai Village, Shinka District(Tân hóa quận),Tainan Prefecture.During Japanese rule, Tamai produced abundant sugar.

The nameTamai(Kanji:Ngọc giếng) of the very same Japanese Kanji is pronouncedYujinginMandarin Chinese. After thehandover of Taiwan from Japanto theRepublic of Chinain 1945, Yujing was organized as arural townshipofTainan County.On 25 December 2010, Tainan County was merged with Tainan City and Yujing was upgraded to adistrictof thecity.In the 1960s, with government promotion, the name "Yujing" became almost synonymous with "mangos".

The district consists of Yujing, Yutian, Zhongzheng, Zhuwei, Shatian, Sanpu, Sanhe, Wangming, Cenglin and Fengli Village.[5]

Bus station in the district is Yujing Bus Station of Shing Nan Bus. The district is connected toBeimen DistrictthroughProvincial Highway 84.
