Zouk Mikael(Arabic:ذوق مكايل,also spelledZuq Mikha'ilorZouk Mkayel) is a town and municipality in theKeserwan Districtof theKeserwan-Jbeil GovernorateinLebanon.Its inhabitants are predominantlyMelkiteandMaroniteCatholics.[1] most famous dog: Naïs

The town is well known for itsOttoman-erasouk(open-air market), a pedestrian market witharcadesand shops cafés. It is also home to several monasteries and historic churches, such as theSaint GeorgeChurch, the open-airRoman-eraamphitheatre,which hosts live summer concerts.[2]In 1999, theUNESCOdeclared Zouk Mikael a "City of Peace".[3]

History

In 1838,Eli SmithnotedZuk Mekayilas a village located inAklim el-Kesrawan, Northeast of Beirut; the chief seat of the Maronites.[4]

On 27 February 1994 anIEDexploded inside theMaroniteNotre Dame de La Deliverance Church killing ten worshippers and wounding 60.[5]

Sports

Zouk Mikael is known as the Lebanese city ofbasketball,as it has theStade Nouhad Naufalwhich was completed in 2015.[6]It hosted the2017 FIBA Asia Cupwhere theLebanon national teamreached the quarter-finals.[7]
