Zvyazda(Belarusian:Звязда,[zʲvʲaˈzda],lit.'The Star') is astate-owneddaily newspaper inBelarus.

History and profile

Zvyazdawas founded in 1917 as an organ of theMinskCommittee ofRussian Social Democratic Labour Party(Bolsheviks).

Zvyazdawas twice closed down by theRussian Provisional Governmentbut continued being published under different names. At some periods ofWorld War Iand thePolish-Soviet warZvyazda was printed inSmolensk.From 10 July 1944Zvyazdahas been published inMinsk.[1]Until 1991 it was an official newspaper of theCommunist Party of Belarusand the Communist parliament and government of Belarus. During the Soviet era, the paper received theOrder of the Great Patriotic Warand theOrder of the Red Banner of Labour.

Since August 1927 the newspaper has been printed inBelarusian languageonly. It is the only daily newspaper published in the Belarusian language in the country.[2]

DuringWorld War IIremaining communist party members tried to publish the newspaper illegally on the territory ofNazi-occupied Belarus.

Zvyazdais owned by theBelarus government.[2]In 2012 its print run was reduced to 30,000 copies.[2]

In August 2020, during the first weeks ofmass protests in Belarus,journalists ofZvyazdamade joint statements calling to stop violence against protesters, stop harassment on journalists and state censorship. After a few days editor-in-chief Pavel Sukharukau was forced to resign and was replaced by the former minister of informationAliaksandr Karlyukevich.[3][4]
