Taiwan,officially theRepublic of China(ROC), is acountryinEast Asia.The Republic of China, originally based in mainlandChina,now governs theisland of Taiwan,which constitutes more than 99% of its territory, as well asPenghu,Kinmen,Matsu,andother minor islands,following its loss of the mainland China territory in 1949 in theChinese Civil War.This remaining area is alsoconstitutionallycalled the "Free area of the Republic of China"which is not ruled by theCommunist Party of ChinainBeijing.Neighboring states include thePeople's Republic of China(PRC) to the west (mainland China),Japanto the east and northeast, and thePhilippinesto the south. Taiwan is one ofthe most densely populated countriesin the world.Taipeiis theseat of the central government,and together with the surrounding cities ofNew TaipeiandKeelungformsthe largest metropolitan areaon the island.
