Etymology

[edit]

STEDT relates it toProto-Sino-Tibetan*wal(round; circular),which is also connected to the following:

  • Viên(OC*ɢon,“round” )
  • Hoàn(OC*ɡʷraːn,“round” )
  • Toàn(OC*sɢʷans,“to revolve; to return” )
  • Hoàn(OC*ɡʷraːn,“ring” )
  • Hoàn(OC*ɡʷraːn,“to return” )
  • Viện(OC*ɦŋons,“courtyard” ).

Vựng(OC*ɢuns,“halo” ) is the same word (Schuessler, 2007). It is possibly related toVân(OC*ɢun,“cloud” ) (ibid.).

Additionally,Karlgren (1933)relates it toVi(OC*ɢʷɯl,“to surround” ), andWang (1982)toHồi(OC*ɡuːl,“to return” ).
