The surnameHitleris a variation ofHiedler,a surname applied to those who resided near aHiedl(“subterranean river”)(Bavariandialect).[1][2]Earlier theories[3]derived the surname fromHüttler(also spelledHuettler), either meaning "one who lives in a hut", fromHütte(“hut”),or fromhüten(“guard, look after”).
