The surnameHitleris a variation ofHiedler,a surname applied to those who resided near aHiedl(subterranean river)(Bavariandialect).[1][2]Earlier theories[3]derived the surname fromHüttler(also spelledHuettler), either meaning "one who lives in a hut", fromHütte(hut),or fromhüten(guard, look after).
