Usage notes

[edit]

This prefix is used somewhat less frequently since thecentimetre–gram–second (CGS) system of unitswas superseded as atechnical standardby themetre–kilogram–second (MKS) system of unitsand then theInternational System of Units (SI).For example, "1 cm" (one centimetre) may often be written instead as either "10 mm" or "0.01 m", depending on scientific discipline. However, the use of centimetres is still quite common both in the literature of the health sciences and in general education.
