From Proto-Mordvinic *pičə, Proto-Finno-Permic *pečä~*penčä (Scots pine; Pinus sylvestris). Related to Finnish petäjä, Livonian piedag, Northern Sami beahci, Eastern Mari пӱнчӧ (pünčö), Udmurt пужым (pužym).
