Urdu
[edit]Etymology
[edit]BorrowedfromPunjabiکھٹّا(khaṭṭā,“yellow, sour”),fromSauraseni Prakrit𑀔𑀝𑁆𑀝(khaṭṭa),fromSanskritखट्ट(khaṭṭa).
The expected outcome from direct inheritance isکھاٹا(khāṭā),so the lack of vowel lengthening before a geminate consonant means that the word was probably borrowed from Punjabi.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (Standard Urdu)IPA(key):/kʰəʈ.ʈɑː/
