Etymology

[edit]

BorrowedfromPunjabiکھٹّا(khaṭṭā,yellow, sour),fromSauraseni Prakrit𑀔𑀝𑁆𑀝(khaṭṭa),fromSanskritखट्ट(khaṭṭa).

The expected outcome from direct inheritance isکھاٹا(khāṭā),so the lack of vowel lengthening before a geminate consonant means that the word was probably borrowed from Punjabi.
