In thehangulscript, first attested in theYongbi eocheon'ga(Long phi ngự thiên ca / 용비어천가), 1447, asMiddle Korean나랗〮(Yale:nàláh), fromOld KoreanQuốc ác(*NALak).Compare Yukjin dialect나랑(narang),which preserves the velar nature of the coda consonant.

Beyond Koreanic, the word is usually connected toProto-Tungusic*nā(land),and henceManchuᠨᠠ(na,land)andNanaiна(na,land),with*lak~*lahbeing a suffix.[1]Alsocf.-tahin Middle Koreanᄯᅡᇂ(stah,ground, land)> Korean(ttang,ibid.)and-lkin Middle Koreanᄒᆞᆰ(holk,earth, soil)> Korean(heuk,ibid.).
