[edit]In thehangulscript, first attested in theYongbi eocheon'ga(Long phi ngự thiên ca / 용비어천가), 1447, asMiddle Korean나랗〮(Yale:nàláh), fromOld KoreanQuốc ác(*NALak).Compare Yukjin dialect나랑(narang),which preserves the velar nature of the coda consonant.
Beyond Koreanic, the word is usually connected toProto-Tungusic*nā(“land”),and henceManchuᠨᠠ(na,“land”)andNanaiна(na,“land”),with*lak~*lahbeing a suffix.[1]Alsocf.-tahin Middle Koreanᄯᅡᇂ(stah,“ground, land”)> Korean땅(ttang,“ibid.”)and-lkin Middle Koreanᄒᆞᆰ(holk,“earth, soil”)> Korean흙(heuk,“ibid.”).
