Biographie[modifier|modifier le code]

Il amorce une carrière littéraire en signant à partir de1923un grand nombre de nouvelles, dont plusieurs appartiennent augenre policieret à la comédie romantique, pour divers magazines, notammentSmart SetetThe Saturday Evening Post.En 1933, il met fin à l'écriture de nouvelles quand il est appelé àHollywoodoù il sera scénariste. Son travail est couronné puisqu'il récolte deux nominations auxOscarspour ses scénarios adaptés pourLes Raisins de la colère(1940), film deJohn Ford,d'après leroman éponymedeJohn Steinbeck,et pourHoly Matrimony(1943), film deJohn Stahl,d'après le romanBuried Alived'Arnold Bennett.

Johnson devient producteur en 1935 et passe derrière la caméra dans lesannées 1950,tout en continuant son activité de scénariste. Comme réalisateur, il est surtout connu pour trois films:La Veuve noire(1954), avecGinger Rogers,Van HeflinetGene Tierney,d'après le roman éponyme dePatrick Quentin;L'Homme au complet gris(1956), avecGregory Peck,Jennifer JonesetFredric March;etLes Trois Visages d'Ève(1957), avecJoanne Woodward,Lee J. CobbetDavid Wayne,film qui vaut l'Oscar de la meilleure actriceà Woodward lors de la30ecérémonie des Oscarsen 1958.

Nunnally Johnson a eu trois épouses: Marion Byrnes, Alice Mason etDorris Bowdon.Avec cette dernière, il a eu trois enfants, dontMarjorie Fowler.Il est le grand-père de l’acteurJack Johnsonet le beau-père deGene FowlerJr.
