The Star-Advertiser joins a growing number of small and large newspaper companies across the country, including the New York Times, that have taken this step. A recent University of Missouri survey found that at the papers in the United States that don't charge for online news content, only 15 percent had no plans to charge.

As with other papers that have begun charging, we view this move as an investment in the future so that we can continue our journalistic mission of offering a credible report of news, information and opinion. No other organization can match the Star-Advertiser's breadth and depth of Hawaii news, and revenue from digital subscriptions will contribute to a continuing investment in journalists and technology.
