O nomeBrigantiaé a forma feminina doprotoindoeuropeo*bhr̥g'hntī,da raízberg'h"alto, nobre, elevado". O nome era en orixe unepítetoadxectivable que significaba simplemente "a alta", "a elevada". O etónimoBrigantestamén se pode traducir como "os altos, os nobres" ou "os das terras altas" (IEW,s.v. "bhereg'h-" ).
