Title name formatting
To make sure titles have a consistent presentation across the database, there are specific rules around
formatting, localization & capitalization – for example:
- The name should reflect theoriginal titleof the production shown in its
original language, and as appearson-screenin the opening credits (if
released) or how it will appear when released (including festival releases).
- The character set used for all primary titles isISO-LATIN-1,titles using other character
sets(e.g., ISO-LATIN-2, Chinese pictograms, Cyrillic letters, etc.)should be transliterated to
ISO-LATIN-1.
- English, Portuguese, Hebrew, Indian languages should capitalize letters at the start of words, with a
few exceptions, such as – a /an/and/as
/at/by/for/from/
in/of/on/or/the
/to/with
For a full list of all of our title name formatting rules, such ascapitalization for other languages,
possessives, subtitles & more – headon over to ourTitle Formatting article.
In-Development vs. In-Production / Released
Users with a free IMDb account can submit titles in any production status besides In-Development, this is
reserved for users with an IMDbPro membership.
If you don't have an IMDbPro membership, don't worry about accidentally submitting a title which may be rejected – the option to submit in-Development will not appear in the available list on the submission form for you.

When will my update be added?
The new title you submit will need to first be reviewed by a member of the editing
team

12-48
hours,however may take longer.
If you'd like to know its status, you cantrack your requestfrom your contribution

It's been ages, but my update hasn't appeared on
IMDb, what's happened?
If you'd like to know its status, you cantrack your requestand it should tell you if the
title has been rejected, along with a guidance of what to do next to re-submit the
request for it to be approved in the future.
Remember that your request should adhere to the policies in this article and should
include enough evidence to help our editing team verify that the title's in active
production or released.

I promise my title is eligible and will be released!
You must add it!
The number of projects that are cancelled, completed but never get a release is enormous.
To ensure we're being as factual as possible, we need to be able to verify the new title
ourselves before t can be approved.
If you provide verifiable evidence that the title fulfills our acceptance criteria in
some way, we'll be glad to list it.
We don't care if the budget is $1,000 or $100,000,000: as long as the title is submitted
with the proper information and meets our eligibility criteria we will list it.
Of course, the eligibility of high profile studio projects is easier to verify but even
those titles get cancelled/removed/rejected if our staff fails to verify their
eligibility too.

Can I add a different cut, edition, or version to IMDb
separately?
Sometimes, a title exists and is released in more than one versions; typically this
happens when a film premieres at festivals or other limited release and then undergoes
changes before wider distribution, or when a film is re-released in an extended version
(such as a director's cut, or special edition). This is not uncommon, and we typically
document the differences between two or more versions of the same work by adding an
entry to the title'sAlternative Versionssection.
In some rare cases two versions of the same title may differ significantly enough to
warrant the creation of two separate title pages. When this happens, the two versions
can linked via an entry in the'Movie Connection' section through the
appropriate "version of"connection. This is however a very rare exception that
is made only when we determine that two separate title pages are warranted. The decision
to create a separate new title page instead of an alternate version entryis
exclusively made on a case-by-case basisby our editors.
To provide some guidance, these are some of the criteria that are typically considered
when determining whether a new version of the film justifies the creation of a separate
title page:
- Storyline:Does the plot differ significantly between versions
(e.g. different endings, different story outcome for some characters), or are the
differences limited to additional scenes/content (e.g. insertion of additional
material originally left out of the first release or other minor story changes)?
- Co-existence:Are/were both versions of the same title available
for viewing at the same time, or did one version effectively replace the other upon
release?
- Running time:Does the new version include a substantial amount of
new footage (e.g. there's a significant difference from the original running time)?
- Cast:Do the two versions feature different cast members playing
the same role (e.g. scenes were reshot with different actors after the release of
the initial version)?
- Different above the line talent:Are there notable differences in
the main creative credits (e.g. director, writer) or is the new version a re-edited
cut of the same film with only a few new cast or crew members (e.g. a different
editor or music composer)?
- Wide vs. Limited distribution:How widely was each version
distributed? Was the first version of a film seen by only a few people before being
re-cut/re-edited later for theatrical distribution or was the film was widely
released and then re-released in a different version?
- Changes caused by release timing:Was a new version of a film
created to include changes or additional footage because of events occurring during
the time elapsed that from the original release (e.g. a documentary that required
changes to include new information about events that transpired after it originally
premiered)?
Unless the new version of a title is significantly and verifiably different from the
original one in several of the above areas, we will not create a separate title page,
and details the new version should be submitted as an "Alternate Versions" entry for the
original film.

The title was listed and now it's gone! Why?
All titles in production/development are accepted on a provisional basis and are
periodically reviewed.
If we're unable to verify that they're still eligible to be listed, we will remove them.
If you want to avoid this, make sure that the information about the title is current and
factual, and remember that we reserve the right to withdraw and modify information at
any time at our discretion.
If you feel that the title should be reinstated, you need to resubmit it and our editors
will re-examine it as a new submission.
