New York dikenal karena konsentrasi firma sektor jasa yang tinggi dalam bidang hukum, akuntansi, perbankan dan konsultan manajemen.[9]
Industri keuangan, asuransi, kesehatan, dan lahan yasan membentuk dasar ekonomi New York. Kota ini juga merupakan pusat media massa, jurnalisme dan penerbitan yang penting di Amerika Serikat, dan merupakan pusat seni utama di negara ini. Wilayah metropolitan New York memilikiproduk metropolitan brutosenilai $1,13 triliun pada tahun 2005,[11][12]ekonomi regional terbesar di Amerika Serikat.[13]Ekonomi kota ini menyumbang sebagian besar aktivitas ekonomi di negara bagian New York dan New Jersey.[13]
