Dia dibesarkan olehkeluargayang miskin.[1]Lalu saat usianya mencapai14tahun, dia bekerja padapedagangkaindiWindsor,namun dia segera dipecat olehtuannya.[1]Kemudian menjadiasistenseorangahlikimia,bekerja pada pedangan kain lagi, sampai akhirnya ketika tahun1883,dia menjadipenjaga pintudiMidhurst Grammar School.[1]Selanjutnya saatumurnya18,Wells memperolehbeasiswauntukbelajarbiologidiNormal School of Science(kemudian disebutRoyal College) diKensingtonselatan,London.[1]Wells lulus dariLondon Universitytahun1888.[1]
