Secara umum disebutkeluarga ikan mas,anggotanya kadang disebut jugasiprinid.Siprinide adalah salah satu familia ikan terbesar dan secara umum adalah keluarga hewanvertebratadengan jumlah terbesar, dengan lebih dari 2.400spesiesyang terbagi dalam 220genera.Familia ini termasuk ordoCypriniformes,yang dua per tiganya adalah anggota siprinid.[1]Nama keluarga ikan ini berasal dariYunani kunokyprînos(κυπρῖνος, "ikan karper" ),
