Request for your feedback on improving the Content Translation tool for Javanese Wikipedia

My name is Uzoma, a Community Relations Specialist supporting the WMF Language team. Nice to e-meet you. I am contacting you because the WMF Language team noticed ahuge deletion ratio of articles created with Content Translation in Javanese Wikipedia last quarter,and since you are an admin in Javanese Wikipedia, we would appreciate your feedback on what you think is the cause of the huge deletion ratio and how to mitigate this problem in Javanese Wikipedia.

Our request

We appreciate your great work in Javanese Wikipedia to ensure standard and quality articles are not compromised. Also, it is a big task to encounter content that is not standard daily, and a difficult decision to delete them because they fall below standard. Having all these in mind, we would appreciate it if you could help us understand the following:

• What makesthe articles created with content translationfall below standard in Javanese Wikipedia?
• What are the common mistakes editors that use content translation make? Mistakes like:
  • Translating badly written content from another language
  • Translated articles lack references
  • Missing templates
  • Articles are hard to understand or read due to Machine translation used

Hi, Uzoma. Sorry for the late response. I did delete many CX articles from a user since they suspiciously made too many articles in a short period of time and didn't check the quality of their articles which is why their translation quality is far beyond acceptable, and I need to delete many. I'm still going to delete many more since their created translations were too many.

1. Few users are using CX these days compared to several years ago, so it's rarely used lately. In a user's side, it is a user's problem that they lack linguistic knowledge, e.g English and Javanese, but insist to use CX. They resulted bad-quality translations.
2. The common mistake that I find: the inclusion of many foreign words, especially Indonesian, in the supposedly Javanese translations.
3. If it is possible for the machine, please consider a user's linguistic ability before allowing them to translate from a pair of languages, especially English-Javanese pair. Also, don't allow a user to publish multiple translations in short period of time. For example, maybe allow a user to publish just one translation in 30 minutes. And then, please automatically include a translation tag for a translation article. So, when a translation is published, it has a translation tag to ease other users in doing maintenance.
4. I delete mostly a user's translations from English since they were hardly understandable and too far from natural in Javanese. The person did the translations probably need to improve their English skill in the first place before jumping into the English-Javanese translation.Wirjadisastra(rembugan)6 Januari 2022 03.35 (UTC)

I have follow-up questions, and I will really appreciate your input on the questions. They are:

1. You pointed out that fewer contributors use Content translation these days; I would like to know why you think this is so?
2. As someone who uses the tool with good linguistic knowledge of the language pair you are translating (removing your admin hat), what is the most challenging part of translating an article using the Content Translation tool in Javanese Wikipedia? Is it:

• • Adding the references
  • Adding or editing the Infobox
  • Having missing templates
  • Using the Machine Translation
  • Editing links in the articles
  • Publishing translated article
  • Other issues or combinations of the above

Based on your answer to the second question, Why is it the most challenging part of translating articles in your Wikipedia?

Hi, Uzoma. I'm barely active in this wiki these days. So, sorry if my response is too late.:(

1. Users that used to use the CX were less active on wiki these days, just like me. It must affect the number of users using the CX.
2. The most challenging part for me is having missing templates. However, I usually fix missing templates after I publish translations, also I don't prefer to work on templates while on the CX's interface, so I just skip them and focus on the text being translated. It's the most challenging because templates don't translate across language. They are coded in one Wikipedia, but the code may not work well in the Javanese Wikipedia. Usually, a user has to import templates from other Wikipedias and to translate them if necessary in order to fix the missing templates, which are too many things to do than just doing pure translation.Wirjadisastra(rembugan)19 Januari 2022 12.23 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
