സ്റ്റീഫൻ സ്വിഗ്(/ zwaɪɡ, swaɪɡ /; [1] ജർമ്മൻ: [tsvaɪk]; 28 നവംബർ 1881 - 22 ഫെബ്രുവരി 1942) ഒരുഓസ്ട്രിയൻനോവലിസ്റ്റും നാടകകൃത്തും പത്രപ്രവർത്തകനും ജീവചരിത്രകാരനുമായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സാഹിത്യജീവിതകാലഘട്ടമായ 1920 കളിലും 1930 കളിലും ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രചാരമുള്ള എഴുത്തുകാരിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.[1]

ഒരു സമ്പന്നനായ ജൂത തുണി നിർമ്മാതാവ് മോറിറ്റ്സ് സ്വിഗിന്റെയും (1845-1926), യഹൂദ ബാങ്കിങ് കുടുംബത്തിലെ മകൾ ഇഡ ബ്രറ്റ്വാറിന്റെയും (1854-1938), മകൻ ആയി സ്റ്റീഫൻവിയന്നയിൽജനിച്ചു.[2]ചെക്ക് എഴുത്തുകാരനായഇഗോൺ ഹോസ്റ്റോവിസ്കിയുമായിഅദ്ദേഹം ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തെ "വളരെ ദൂരെയുള്ള ഒരു ബന്ധു" എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.[3]ചില സ്രോതസ്സുകൾ അവരെ ബന്ധുക്കളായി വിവരിക്കുന്നു.
സ്വീഗ്വിയന്ന സർവകലാശാലയിൽതത്ത്വശാസ്ത്രം പഠിക്കുകയും 1904-ൽ "ഹിപ്പോലൈറ്റ് ടെയിന്റെതത്ത്വശാസ്ത്രം "എന്ന പ്രബന്ധം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഡോക്ടറൽ ബിരുദം നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിൽ മതം ഒരു പ്രധാന പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചില്ല. “എന്റെ യഹൂദരായിരുന്ന അച്ഛനും അമ്മയ്ക്കും ആകസ്മികമായിട്ടായിരുന്നു തന്റെ ജനനമെന്ന് സ്വീഗ് പിന്നീട് ഒരു അഭിമുഖത്തിൽ പറയുകയുണ്ടായി. എന്നിട്ടും അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ യഹൂദ വിശ്വാസം ത്യജിച്ചില്ല, ബുച്മെൻഡൽ എന്ന കഥയിലെന്നപോലെ യഹൂദന്മാരെയും യഹൂദ പ്രമേയങ്ങളെയും കുറിച്ച് ആവർത്തിച്ചു എഴുതി. സിയോണിസത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാപകനായ തിയോഡോർ ഹെർസലുമായി സ്വീഗിന് ഊഷ്മളമായ ബന്ധമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അന്നത്തെ വിയന്നയിലെ പ്രധാന പത്രമായ ന്യൂ ഫ്രീ പ്രസ്സെയുടെ സാഹിത്യ പത്രാധിപരായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ ഹെർസൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി. സ്വീഗിന്റെ ആദ്യകാല ലേഖനങ്ങൾ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കാൻ ഹെർസ് സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[4]സ്വീഗ് അന്താരാഷ്ട്രവാദത്തിലും യൂറോപ്യൻ മതത്തിലും വിശ്വസിച്ചു, ദ വേൾഡ് ഓഫ് ഹിസ്റ്ററി, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആത്മകഥ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു. ആമോസ് എലോൺ പറയുന്നതനുസരിച്ച്, ഹെർസലിന്റെ ഡെർ ജുഡെൻസ്റ്റാറ്റ് എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തെ സ്വീഗ് വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചത് "മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുള്ള ഗ്രന്ഥം, ഒരു കഷണം അസംബന്ധം" എന്നാണ്.[5]
