Robert "Bob" Michael Gates,Ph.D.(lahir25 September1943) merupakanpresidenUniversiti Texas A&M,dan juga bekasPengarah Agensi Perisikan Pusat(CIA). Beliau merupakan calon Presiden untuk menjawat jawatanSetiausaha Pertahanan,ditangguhkan pengesahannya oleh Senat Amerika Syarikat. Gates telah berkhidmat selama 26 tahun di dalamAgensi Perisikan Pusat(CIA) dan jugaMajlis Keselamatan Kebangsaan.Di bawahPresidenGeorge H.W. Bush,beliau telah berkhidmat sebagai PengarahAgensi Perisikan Pusat.Selepas meninggalkan CIA, beliau telah menulis memoir beliau,[1]menjadi presiden Universiti Texas A&M, dan menjadi ahli kepada beberapalembagasyarikat korporat.Gate telah berkhidmat sebagai ahlibipartisancommission diketuai olehJames A. Baker III,Kumpulan Pembelajaran Iraq,yang telah mempelajarikempen Iraq.Beliau juga menjadi orang pertama dipilih mengetuaiJabatan Keselamatan Dalam Negeri(United States Department of Homeland Security) apabila ia telah ditubuhkan berikutan denganperistiwa September 11.[2]
Selepaskeputusan pilihan raya pertengahan musim 2006,PresidenGeorge W. Bushtelah mengumumkan pencalonan Gates untuk menggantikanDonald RumsfeldsebagaiSetiausaha Pertahanan Amerika Syarikatpada9 November,2006.[3][4] Gates telah menyatakan di dalam suratnya kepada para pelajar bahawa beliau akan menyambungkan tugasnya sebagai Presiden Texas A&M sehingga selesai prosesmendapat kepastianprocess.[5]Gates akan menghadapi dahulu kepastian daripadaJawatankuasa Perkhidmatan bersenjata,dan sekiranya diluluskan, oleh satu undimajoritidi dalam undi vote in theSenate.

[sunting|sunting sumber]A native ofWichita,Kansas,Gates attained the rank ofEagle Scoutin theBoy Scouts of Americaand is a recipient of theDistinguished Eagle Scout Awardfrom the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated fromWichita East High Schoolin 1961. Gates then headed east to attend theCollege of William and Marywhere he graduated with aB.A.in European history in1965.While atWilliam & Mary,Gates was an active member ofAlpha Phi Omega,national service fraternity, as well as active in theYoung Republicansand the business manager for theWilliam and Mary Review,a literary and artmagazine.[6]At William & Mary, Gates was named the graduate that "has made the greatest contribution to his fellow man."[1]Gates then went on to receive amaster's degreeinhistoryfromIndiana Universityin1966,and aPh.D.in Russian and Soviet history fromGeorgetown Universityin1974.
