Most of New York's sheriffs are elected officials, accountable to the citizen voter every 4 years and responsible for the complex operations of a sheriff’s office, which can include criminal law enforcement, traffic patrol, emergency rescue operations, homeland security programs, SWAT operations, civil emergency response, jail operations, correctional alternative management, courtroom security, and civil litigation process.

Program & Services

As part of our mission to promote public safety in New York State, the Sheriffs’ Association manages a number of programs, including Yellow Dot, Operation SAFE CHILD, RapidResponder, JusticeXchange, Traffic Safety, CrashLogic, and the Public Safety and Justice Portal.
