Mary flirts with a scoundrel, named Starling, and John discovers them playing with fire. He slaps Starling's cheek with his glove, rendering the scoundrel frenzied with vengeance. Mary pleads, but John says, "If you are false to me now, you will be false to me afterwards." That night, Mary, filled with misgivings and heartbroken, walks into the family portrait gallery and falls asleep in a big chair. She dreams that two of the portraits, a man and a woman, come to life, and re-enact a tragedy of one hundred years ago, which started in the same way as Mary's flirtation with Starling. The fatal duel scene of a hundred years ago is re-enacted. Then she awakens filled with dread and endeavors to find John. A servant hands her a note left by John, indicating an imminent duel.
