Jusserand aderiu ao serviço diplomático em1876e dois anos depois tornou-secônsulemLondres.Após um período emTunes(à época aTunísiaera um protetorado francês) retornou a Londres (1887) como membro daembaixadafrancesa. Serviu como ministro plenipotenciário emCopenhague(1890) e foi transferido paraWashington, D.C.em1902,onde permaneceu até1925como embaixador.

Recebeu oPrémio Pulitzer de Históriaem1917pelo livro "With Americans of Past and Present Days"e foi eleito membro daAcadémie des Sciences Morales et Politiquesem1925.

Foi ainda presidentes daAmerican Historical Association.
