In 1987, durin theCommunistregime oTodor Zhivkov,the destricts wur consolidatit intae nine muckler provinces (oblasts), whilk survivit till 1999.[1]
Ilka province is namit efter its caipital. In the case oSofia Provincean Sofia Caipital,Sofiais the caipital o baith, but its territory is anerlie includit in Sofia Caipital.
The provinces are further subdividit intae 264 municipalities (община,obshtina).

The nine muckle provinces are leetit below, alang wi the pre-1987 destricts (post-1999 provinces) comprisin them.
