350.orgis aninternationalenvironmentalorganization.[1]It was started by authorBill McKibben,[2]with the goal of building a globalgrassrootsmovementto fight againstglobal warmingand theclimate change denialofglobal warming.However the main goal is to lower the emissions ofcarbon dioxide[3][4]and othergreenhouse gasesin order to avoid climate change problems.

The name 350.org comes theresearchofscientistDr.James Hansen.He wrote in ascientificpaper in 2007 that the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in theatmosphereshould not be higher than 350 parts-per-million (ppm). According to scientific research this is a safemaximumto avoid a climatetipping point.[5][6][7]

350.org works with over 300 other organizations around the world.[8][9]It has had people supporting the organization as "messengers".[10][11]Among them areArchbishopDesmond Tutu,Alex Steffen,[12][13]Bianca JaggerandDavid Suzuki.Van JonesandGus Spethare on 350's U.S. Advisory Council.[14]350.org has aBoard of Directors.

Keystone XL pipeline

350.org is strongly against theKeystone XLpipelineproject. The pipeline is currently being built to transporttar sandoilfromCanadathrough theUnited Statestooil refineriesin theGulf of Mexico.NASAclimatologistJames Hansen described the Keystone XL pipeline as "game over" forthe planet,and called the amount of carbon stored in Canadian tar sands a "fuse to the largest carbon bomb on the planet".[15]

Fossil Fuel Divestment

350.org wants colleges anduniversities,as well as cities,religiousinstitutions, andpensionfunds to withdraw theirinvestmentsfromfossil fuelcompanies. They propose themoneyshould rather be invested insustainablecompanies.

"If it is wrong towreckthe climate, then it is wrong toprofitfrom that wreckage. We want institutions to immediately freeze any new investment in fossil fuel companies, anddivestfrom direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporatebondswithin 5 years. "

TheDo The Mathmovie[17]is a 42-minutedocumentaryabout the movement, the science behind theclimatecrisis and how to end the age of fossil fuels.

Connect the Dots 5.May.2012

The organization's efforts continued into 2012 with a Climate Impacts Day on May 5th ofworldwideseries of rallies under the slogan "Connect the Dots," to draw attention to thelinksbetween climate change andextreme weather.
