Adventure moviesare agenreofmovies.[1]They contain many of the same features ofaction movies,but are usuallysetinexoticlocations.[2]The main theme isadventure,with the characters oftenexploringplaces they have not been before or doing things they have not done before. Commonstorylinesincludequestsfor losttreasure,heroic journeys for the unknown, andjungleordesertsettings. Adventure movies are often set in an historical time and may be based on stories of historical or fictional adventure heroes within the historical context.Kings,battles,rebellionorpiracyare commonly seen in adventure movies.[2]Adventure movies may also be combined with other movie genres, such asscience fiction,fantasyand sometimeswar movies.

The adventure movie was most popular inHollywoodduring the 1930s and 1940s. Movies such asCaptain Blood,The Adventures of Robin HoodandThe Mark of Zorrowere regularly made with major stars, notablyErrol FlynnandTyrone Power,who were closely associated with the genre. In the earliest adventure movies, the main character was usually male. They were portrayed ascourageousheroes,facingtyrantsor rescuing a beautiful woman indistress.

Adventure movies usually emphasise themystery,romance,adventure,danger,andterrorof the unknown. Common settings include ajungleordesert.Classic dangers include ferocious man-eating mammals and reptiles, hostilenatives,deadly diseases,lost citiesand crumbling temples, torrential rivers, waterfalls, whirlpools, and quicksand bogs, damsels in distress, evilemirsand treacheroustribalchieftains,and despicable white adventurers from the civilized world intent onexploitingthe jungle, its animals, treasures, resources, and primitive native peoples.

Adventure movies may crossover into other genres such as war, crime, romance, or horror.
