Fermo is on a hill only a few miles from the coast of theAdriatic Sea.It is region with a highpopulation densitynearseaportslikePorto San GiorgioandPorto Sant'Elpidio.

Fermo is on a hill, theSabulo,319 m (1,047 ft) high, at about 6 km (3.7 mi) from theAdriatic Sea.It has an area of 124.53 km2(48.08 sq mi) and itsaltitudeis 319 m (1,047 ft).

Thecomuneborders with the followingcomuniːAltidona,LapedonaandMonterubbianoto the south;Ponzano di Fermoto the southwest;Grottazzolina,Magliano di TennaandRapagnanoto the west;Torre San Patrizioto the northwest;Monte Urano,Sant'Elpidio a MareandPorto Sant'Elpidioto the north. To the east isPorto San Giorgioand the Adriatic Sea.

Thecomunehas two smallexclavesː the largest (Gabbiano) has an area of 5 km2(1.9 sq mi) and is surrounded byMogliano(province of Macerata),Francavilla d'Ete,Massa FermanaandMontegiorgio;and the smallest (Boara) has an area of 0.3 km2(0.12 sq mi) and is surrounded byMontegiorgio,Magliano di Tenna,GrottazzolinaandBelmonte Piceno.
