James Charles "Jim" Lehrer(/ˈlɛərər/;born May 19, 1934 – January 23, 2020) was anAmericanjournalist and novelist.

Lehrer was born inWichita, Kansas.He was theexecutive editorand a formernews anchorfor thePBS NewsHouronPBS.Lehrer was also known for his role as a debate moderator in U.S. presidential election campaigns. He was an author of a number offictionandnonfictionbooks.[1]

From 1960 until his death, he was married to novelistKate Staples.They had three children.

Lehrer died at his home inWashington, D.C.on January 23, 2020 from aheart attackat age 85.[2][3]

Lehrer has received twoEmmy Awards,theFred FriendlyFirst Amendment Award and theGeorge Foster Peabody Award.[4]He has received the William Allen White Foundation Award for Journalistic Merit and theUniversity of Missouri School of Journalism's Honor Medal.[4]Lehrer was honored in 1999 with theNational Humanities Medal.It was given byPresidentBill ClintonandFirst LadyHillary Rodham Clinton.[4]He has been inducted into theTelevision Hall of Fameand is aFellowof theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences.[4]Lehrer has receivedhonorary degreesfrom 42universitiesandcolleges.[4]
